In ancient time wine was stored, sold and transported in clay vessels called amphoras. This method of storing later became wine barrels made of wood. However, wood these days are getting scarce and needed for more important steps like aging, usually in very large barrels. This adds flavor to the wine. Once the wine is adequately aged other storage and transport methods, like stainless steel drums, which can handle the pressure, especially for bubbly wines.
